Event Details

Sir Gregory Doran, Emeritus Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, will deliver the Inaugural Annual Rose Playhouse Lecture. The Rose Playhouse and London South Bank University have partnered for this event.

The lecture will be the keynote address of a symposium on Revisiting Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus 1594–2024. Doran will discuss Titus Andronicus, his production and the play’s relationship to The Rose.

In 1593 and 1594, Henslowe’s account book recorded the first performances of Titus Andronicus. Then 400 years later Doran directed a seminal production of it at the Market Theatre, Johannesburg, with his South Africa-born partner, Antony Sher, as Titus. Thirty years on, Doran will also look back at his production, its influence on a generation of theatre-makers and its reimagining for a modern political purpose.

The event will be held at London Southbank University in Borough. The talk will also be streamed live on Zoom. Ticket information and more details will be announced soon. There will be discounts for Friends of The Rose Playhouse.

The evening will help launch a major fundraising campaign for The Rose Revealed Project.
